Located in a traditional suburban shopping mall Denim is a clothing store intended to occupy a space formerly selling Nordic Track® equipment. The project can be understood as an additive transformation from new ‘old’ to new ‘new’.
The transformation from ‘old’ to ‘new’ occurs as a second layer of sliding panels, display screens, and a center table stretched the length of the store. The need for displaying merchandize also served as an opportunity to challenge outdated conceptions of display within a shopping mall context. In lieu of traditional mannequins a layer of sliding panels encases clothing sandwiched between two layers of glass. The corresponding merchandise fills the residual space leftover between existing column walls and the new layer of sliding panels.
At the front of the store two blank white boxes serve as screens for digital media. The media is programmed to relay the image of customers checking themselves out in their new clothing, acting as an evolving interface between the mall and the store. In progress
